Club History

History – Banská Bystrica:
The City Where the Hockey Heart Beats

The history of hockey under the Urpín hill has been unfolding since 1922. From the first matches played on the frozen Hron River, the club has traveled a path that transformed the city into a true hockey bastion. In 1956, one of the country’s first artificial ice rinks was built here, followed by a roof in 1966. This step laid the foundation for professional growth and the development of future NHL stars.

The Legendary Iskra Era

The unforgettable period under the name Iskra Smrečina shaped the club’s identity. During the 70s and 80s, the club belonged to the elite of the SNHL (Slovak National Hockey League), and the stadium was consistently packed to the rafters. It was during this era that legends who later conquered the world emerged, leading the club to its first historic promotion to the Extraliga in 1995.

The Golden Present

The modern history of HC ’05 is adorned with successes, culminating in the legendary “golden hat-trick” (three consecutive titles) between 2017 and 2019. Today, the club continues to write its story—a story starring modern hockey, incredible fans, and the nurturing of future legends.
